Produced for Social Media Week Glasgow by Walking Heads in association with Glasgow Museums, the Five Easy Pieces podcast series explores the city’s cultural history through a series of objects from Glasgow’s past.

Listen to find out more about Glasgow. Hidden or forgotten histories of the city emerge from stories of objects chosen by curators of Glasgow Museums: the Coronation Tram, the Comet steamship, Kate Davis’s drawing inspired by Christabel Pankhurst’s vandalised pamphlet, the Hogback gravestones of Govan – and 31 secret objects to be revealed in October.

Episode 1: Perhaps characteristically Glasgow was the last British city to give up trams – the Coronation Tram, designed for the 1938 Empire Exhibition was art deco on wheels, offering the general public a level of sophistication more usually reserved for ocean liners.

Episode 2: An introduction to the great Clyde shipbuilding era unfolds from the model of the Comet steamer – Europe’s first commercial steamboat that set sail on the River Clyde 200 years ago.

Episode 3: Suffragette history is unearthed from the stores of GoMA as art breathes new life into artefacts in Glasgow’s extraordinary civic collection (the biggest in Europe). A fascinating account of artist Kate Davis’s response to a violently vandalised pamphlet – Militant Methods Handbook by Christabel Pankhurst – and the new work she created.

Episode 4: Community collaboration is the essence of 31 days of inspiration – people who work for Glasgow museums have selected one object for each day in October. As part of the Big Draw, the people of Glasgow will be invited to draw a picture inspired by the object and post a photograph of their drawing on the Open Museum Facebook page. The aim: a new community archive.

Episode 5: And the Hogback gravestones of Govan connect Glasgow to a Viking past in the mediaeval kingdom of Strathclyde. These ‘houses for the dead’ open the way to a ‘longer, larger history’ challenging the stereotypical view of Govan.

All this and much more will emerge through Five Easy Pieces in the live events running every day throughout Social Media Week Glasgow.
