How well do you know Glasgow’s music scene?  Who are the patrons of the Arches When did the Scotia bar open?  What group of former customers went under the name BLUE?   And what on earth does BLUE stand for?

Scotia bar doorway

The Scotia bar drew the most comments on Facebook

We had fun last week setting questions for the Knock Knock competition. But sometimes we had to dig deep for the bonus questions! Thanks to some quick thinking folk, answers came fast on both Facebook and Twitter.  Of course it wasn’t too difficult if you had already downloaded the Glasgow Music Tour.  And there is always Google as one contestant openly admitted.

But we were delighted to see how broad and deep is your knowledge of Glasgow’s music scene.  Responses to the daily quiz came much quicker than we expected.  Malky Bee barely paused for breath in coming up with the date when the Scotia Bar is said to have opened.

Malky Bee ‎1792. Glasgows Oldest Pub as any cigarette smoking gent will tell you on a wet Glasgow night…

We loved this wild swipe at the meaning of BLUE.

David Steven Malone Black Leather Underground Elite… This is a mad, wild guess, and if they don’t exist as a motorbike gang, then they really should!

Yes, indeed they should! Unfortunately Malky Bee came up with the right answer (Bastards, Lunatics, Undesirables and Eccentrics – that’s BLUE, not Knock Knock contestants!).

Surrealistic doorway of Barfly

The old Barfly

Perhaps the toughest task was identifying the old Barfly but on Twitter @esprentals was able to name the venue, sadly closed, and tell us that the 13th Note club was once housed there…

Kevin Hutton and Denise Ross knew the names of the two patrons of the Arches: DJ Carl Cox and Scotland’s poet laureate Liz Lochhead.  (Digging up that bonus question gave us a chance to listen again to poetry as well as music on the Arches story on Glasgow Music Tour).

We thought the picture of the Sub Club might pose problems  but Paul Benedict Henderson not only got it  right straight away but was able to answer two bonus questions and add some new information. ( By the way we’d love to hear more stories about Lucifer’s and other by-gone gigs when we update Glasgow Music Tour! )

Paul Benedict Henderson It opened in 1987, it was Lucifer’s before that. I used to go and watch Glasgow rock ‘n’ roll favourites like the Primevals there as a boy.

So, who won?  Well the clear winner is @espmusicrentals (playing on Twitter) with 5 points.  Second  is Joan Hollywood (on Facebook) with 4 points.  Third equal with 3 points are Malky Bee and Paul Henderson.

Their prizes are:
1st place – Selection of Soma Records and Chemikal Underground CD’s + vinyl, Rare FOUND CDs + vinyl, T-shirt and badges.
2nd place – Selection of Soma Records and Chemikal Underground CD’s + vinyl, Rare FOUND CDs + vinyl.
3rd place –  Selection of Soma Records and Chemikal Underground CD’s + vinyl.

Thanks to everyone who took part.  We enjoyed all your responses so much we hope you will join us for the next competition when there will be more great music prizes.
