Inspired by some of the best improv acts at the Edinburgh Fringe, and featuring a troupe made up of seven of the best actors, comedians, musicians and improvisers Scotland has to offer, “Transylvanian Nights” by the writers of the critically acclaimed “Lingua Frank” Harry Gooch and Jamie McDonald, is the brand new long form improvisation show coming to Scotland later on this year. The theme of the play, as the title suggests, is Gothic, and the stunning costumes of the actors, home-made by Lydia McDonald, reflect this.
At the start of the night, the audience is warmed up with the “To Whom Does The Line Belong Anyway?” routine, which is made up of a few traditional short improv games. However, the main event comes later, when the troupe improvises a Gothic Comedy using only a title randomly selected from suggestions from the audience, which are drawn out of a hat live on stage. While the actors portray plays with titles like “Frankenstein Wears Prada” and “Twilight: The Cappuccino Years” on Stef Skinner’s magnificent set, they are accompanied by Maya Mcourt from the University of Edinburgh on the cello (also completely improvised), which completes the overall gothic theme. Long form improv has so far been fairly unknown and poorly represented in Scotland and, because of this, the first few shows will be run on a “pay what you think” basis, making this a wonderful opportunity for anyone who wants an introduction to long form improv, or, for that matter, just anyone who enjoys good music and good comedy.
