We were very happily surprised to be invited along to speak at a Pecha Kucha event taking place at The Lighthouse and run by Yomego as part of Social Media Week in Glasgow this year.

After the good news had set in, a plan ensued to put together 20 slides to be presented for 20 seconds each, as is the tradition with Pecha Kucha style presentations (something we fortunately learned just in time for our talk!). With the Edinburgh contingent of Walking Heads already attending the launch of Hubris The Book that evening, our Glasgow based gang members, Cliff and Benny stepped up to take the mic for an evening of informative social media discussion.

The presentation above was (somehow, someway) delivered within the 6 minute 40 second time slot to a full room of social media concerned individuals, from business entrepreneurs to students, journalists and even a Lib Dem politician.

The evening saw presentations from creative dining event orchestrators, Jelly + Gin, offering their personal experiences on how social media has worked wonders for their business no end. We also witnessed solicitor Brian Inkster discussing his successful online Inkster company and personal profiles (even describing them at one point as a battle fleet!). The event also played host to interesting talks from artist and designer Yan Wang, a story based Pecha Kucha from the man behind Bowmore Distillery‘s marketing, and in-depth social media strategy from Digital Editor of The List, Hamish Brown.

The night provided a great opportunity to meet up with other organisations using social media in interesting and innovative ways and we found discussing our competitions (particularly our Merchant City Festival Treasure Hunt and our Knock Knock image competition) was of most interest to others in this field of exploration. We discovered (as we were already inclined to believe) that no one really, as yet, holds ‘the answer’ to social media and its many intricacies and the more creative we can be with these tools, the better for all involved.

All in all, a highly informative and fun evening finished off perfectly with some fine Auchentoshan whisky tasting and a bit of useful networking and chat.
